COPYWRITING FOR HUMANITY!
Most of the time I write copy for brands and businesses. I love doing this. I love figuring out ways to draw a reader in and get them excited in an honest and compelling way. Occasionally, though, I get asked to copywrite something even more special.
A few years ago I was asked to help write the copy for a friend who had to come up with several parent essays for her kids exclusive elementary school applications in San Francisco. She has ADHD and was driving herself crazy trying to put all the stories together to get her two boys into school. She handed all of it over to me and I got to dive into her family history and come up with several essays for each boy, for multiple schools looking for a variation of themes. I’m proud to announce both boys got into their top 2 choices! It’s amazing what a good read can achieve!
More recently I had a client reach out to me with a family dilemma. A relative of hers was separated from her husband and twins because he was not allowed to join her and their son and family here in New Zealand. It was a heartbreaking story and seemed really hopeless.
Anyway, I did my best. I tried to imagine what an immigration officer wanted to read - and what they didn’t get to read often - and I set out to melt the most frozen of hearts.
I’m so pleased to report that it worked! I received this email and I wept tears of joy. Copywriting works!!!! Copywriting can change a life.
(And of course she doesn’t have to pay - this is payment enough!)
Good afternoon Zoe.
I hope you are doing well.
I'm Jenny, the girl you help out last year sometime in September. You help writing a letter for my husband special direction application to the minister of Immigration. You also help proofread my documents. Sorry it took so so long to get back to you.
I have a very good news, my husband and the twins make it to NZ safe and sound last month. We still can not believe this is happening. The moment we receive the visitor visa for my husband to come to NZ to visit me and my son we both cried so much.
This happened because of so many wonderful people around me and you are one of them. We cant say thank enough for your kind words, you supportive and your generosity.
You leave me feeling so thankful and warm when you said ‘“don’t worry about the fee and we can discuss about that when my husband is here in NZ“.
Now that our family is united, we are forever grateful to you for what you have done to our family. We want to pay the fee and would love to sent you a small gift (if it is possible).
Again thank you so so much Zoe.
Jenny
